COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a 2-0 win Friday night at the Ohio State Ice Rink. It wasn’t a highly offensive effort by the Buckeyes who only had 18 shots on goal versus Minnesota Duluth’s 35. It was an effort in penalty killing, the power play and goaltending.

The game began with a back and forth with both teams making turnovers in the neutral zone. At 14:55 Duluth’s Emma Yanko was put in the sin bin for illegal contact to the head. The Buckeyes capitalized on the power play with a goal by junior Maddy Field at 15:00 assisted by freshman Tatum Skaggs and red shirt sophomore Jincy Dunne. The period ended with the Buckeyes ahead 1-0.
In the second period, Duluth put the pressure on the Buckeyes shooting 13 shots on goal all denied by Buckeye netminder Kassidy Suave. The onslaught itself was due to penalties by Lauren Boyle for holding at 1:40 and Skaggs for tripping at 6:56. Duluth turned the Buckeye goal into target practice. Suave put on a dazzling display of goaltending as the Buckeye penalty kill carried the Buckeyes through the period unscathed. Shot after shot it was amazing that the Duluth offense didn’t score once.
Nothing changed during the third period. With two penalties to Charly Dalquist, once for tripping at 12:43, and once for cross-checking at 18:48, and one hooking penalty to Skags; Suave was at it again making saves that no normal goalie could make. Duluth shot 16 shots on goal as Suave looked like a Vezina Trophy winner denying all of Duluth’s shots. Backing Suave up was the Buckeye penalty kill picking up the garbage in front of the net and clearing it out of the zone. Then Buckeye junior Jacyn Reeves broke loose on the breakaway but was denied by Duluth netminder Jessica Converey. Reeves collided with Converey on the play, and senior Julianna Iafallo scored on the rebound making it 2-0 Buckeyes. The goal was counted despite a video review. With the win the Buckeyes remain undefeated going 4-0-1 while the Duluth Bulldogs re now 2-2.
