Bruins spot Caps two, rally for 7-3 win

In Washington, DC, Connor Sheary scored twice for the Capitals in the first period on Monday night for a 2-0 lead over the Boston Bruins.

The Bruins shrugged that deficit off with two each from Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak in a 7-3 win.

“The start was good. I thought we came out and did the right things,” Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette said. “Back-to-back 5-on-3 [penalty kills] were tough. They scored two goals and it’s a 2-2 game after a pretty good first period of 5-on-5 hockey, [but] I don’t think we responded very well from there.”

Linus Ullmark made 27 saves in the Boston win.

Matt Grzelcyk had a goal and five points on the night for the Bruins.

“As it’s happening, you just kind of shake your head,” Grzelcyk said. “I was just laughing during the game because I’ve felt good about my game most of the year and points have been a little bit hard to come by. It’s something I don’t really worry about, but at the same time my job is to [contribute] offensively.”

Boston improved to 19-11-2.

Craig Smith and Erik Haula  also scored for the Bruins who scored six straight for a 6-2 in the game.

Taylor Hall had two assists for the Bruins.

“He’s a pretty explosive player,” Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He finds the ice and can finish plays and can pass as well as he shoots. It’s a good combination right now.”

The Capitals dropped to 20-8-9.

“We have to get back to our game, our game plan,” Sheary said. “We have a lot of good players that have been in and out of the lineup, maybe get them back in and get some reps. We’re not going to hit the panic button. We’re just going to keep grinding away.”

T.J. Oshie added a single marker for the Caps at the end of the second period.

Zach Fucale got the start for the Caps and surrendered four goals and made 12 saves before getting the hook in the second period.

Vitek Vanecek who made 12 saves in a mop up role.
