In another game on Tuesday night with late match heroics, Craig Smith scored with 11 seconds left in extra time to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“I want to come in and just try to do my job the best I could, just chip in and help the puzzle,” Smith said. “This team has some great leadership, we’ve got everybody pulling on the same rope, so if I can just be a little bit a part of that I’ll be doing my job.”
Tuukka Rask made 28 saves for the win, after the Pens had rallied back from an 0-2 deficit.
“Things like that happen very quickly. … That one was just kind of trying to get the goalie moving a little bit, and [Smith] made the right read,” Boston’s David Krejci said. “I’m not really sure the five-hole was open, but it snuck in and we’ll take that win.”
Jason Zucker and Kasperi Kapanen scored for the Penguins in regulation.
“It’s always nice to score but, you know, for me, I think it was a lot more than just getting
chances the past games,” Zucker said. “I don’t think I was playing the right way. I don’t think I was playing a good game. I wasn’t really skating and playing the way I can, so I was happy just to be out there and skating, trying to make some plays, holding onto pucks, and obviously the goal is always great, so I’m happy for that. But we didn’t get the win, so that’s really the ultimate disappointment there.”
Nick Ritchie struck on a two-man power play to give the Bruins the 2-0 lead.
Brad Marchand put the Bruins up 1-0.
Tristan Jarry made 33 saves in the loss.
“I think we’ve been trailing a lot of games now, and it’s always a good quality for a team to kind of come back and at least get that one point,” Kapanen said. “I think for us we’ve just got to be ready right off the hop, so it wasn’t our best in the beginning but after that I feel like we started getting better as a team.”
