Bruins rally late, win in OT, 2-1, over Montreal

In Boston Saturday, the visiting Montreal Canadiens managed to keep the Bruins at bay for nearly 60 minutes.

Nearly.

But the Bruins’ Jake DeBrusk struck for the tying goal with less than three minutes left in regulation to force extra time.

In the overtime, Brad Marchand scored midway through the session to give the Bruins the 2-1 win.

“Yeah, got a little lucky,” Marchand said. “I think they were a little tired. They were definitely a little bit [tired], so nice to get the win though.”

Anton Khudobin made 27 saves to pick up the win.

“A guy [Montreal’s Nicolas Deslauriers] lost his stick. I think that’s a key part of it,” Tory Krug said of the DeBrusk goal. “No, I mean, it can be frustrating, you have so much time on the power play, you’re not getting the goals. We had a lot of good looks. Ultimately it was just getting a shot into the slot and those guys do the work. Great job by those guys to stick with it.”

Boston improved to 40-15-8.

Brendan Gallagher scored the lone goal for the Habs.

Montreal dropped to 25-29-11 with the loss.

“I’m not going to complain about our guys’ effort,” Montreal head coach Claude Julien said. “You know, it’s our fourth game in six nights and we’ve been traveling, and we know the circumstances from [Friday] as well. We tried to hang in there and we played a really good hockey club first and foremost.

“At the same time, our goaltender, who was fresh from not playing last night, was giving us that opportunity. When you take six penalties, whether they’re deserved or whatever the case may be, it eventually catches up to you and we did our best and eventually the fresher team and the better team won.”

Antti Niemi made 48 saves in the hard luck loss.

“When we talk about our roster, and we’ve got a lot of young guys in there and they’re battling and we’re finding ways to get points, I think we’re growing as a team. And we still have a long ways to go, but at least we’re going in the right direction,” Julien said of his club after the loss.
