In Detroit Wednesday, the Boston Bruins forced extra time with the Red Wings when David Pastrnak scored with less 90 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 2-2.
Brad Marchand ended the night for the Bruins 3-2 win when he scored just 35 seconds
into overtime.
“This shows you what kind of character we have on this team,” Marchand said. “We’ve been stepping up to win games, and that’s what you need to have a good team.”
Detroit fell to 0-6 in OT games.
“We’ve looked at everything in great depth, but the key in overtime is that you have to make offensive and defensive plays and we haven’t done that,” Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I never expected we would be 0-6.”
Noel Acciari also scored for Boston in regulation.
“We’ve had a tendency to play down to our competition lately,” Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “That’s dangerous, because Detroit is a better team than their record, but we got it going eventually.”
Detroit’s goals were scored by Tomas Tatar and Dylan Larkin.
“Before the game, we talked about how we knew they were in a funk but they were eventually going to break out of it and get a win. You never want to be the team that gives up that win,” Boston’s Torey Krug said after the game.
After being maligned for much of the early season Tuukka Rask won his fifth straight start and made 31 saves to get the win in Detroit.
“We’ve been able to dig ourselves out of a lot of holes this year,” said Bruins defenseman Torey Krug, who had the assist on Marchand’s goal. “They played a really good defensive game, and we knew we had to do a better job in front of our net.”
Detroit dropped to 1-5-5 in their last 11 games and are 11-13-7 overall.
“I think we’re trying to do the right things, and we did a lot of good things tonight,” Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “We’re just finding ways to lose.”

Jimmy Howard made 29 saves in the loss.
“It is critically important to see how we react tomorrow and how we play Friday. This isn’t easy, but we’re not in the business of easy. We better make sure our heads are right and we come Friday ready to win a hockey game,” Blashill said after the loss.
