Bruins rally but lose to Dallas, 3-2, in OT

The freight train that has been the Boston Bruins of late ran into another team Monday night, the Dallas Stars, and needed a third period goal from Ryan Spooner to force extra time.

In the end, the train was stalled for a game when the Stars’ Tyler Seguin struck for a goal at 2:59 of the extra session for a 3-2 Dallas win.

“I don’t know. I feel like everyone was just sliding at me,” Seguin said. “The whole time I wanted to pass. I was just kind of looking for the right play and just kept holding it. And then the goalie even did a two-pad stack or something. I just shot it and I’m happy it went in.”

With the loss, or perhaps despite the loss, the Bruins picked up a point in their 13th straight game and are an astonishing 9-0-4 in the streak.

Dallas got goals from Stephen Johns and Alexander Radulov in regulation.

Zdeno Chara also scored for the Bruins who trailed 2-0 before rallying for the loser’s point.

“That gave us life, it always does, especially when you’re having a tough time scoring,” Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He was excited, our guys were excited and it gets the crowd going a little bit. I thought it was a turning point, it got us going a little bit. It probably gave us some juice for the third.”

Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves to pick up the win.

“He was sound,” Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock said. “That’s what you hope for. He’s a backup in word only; he’s really a starting goaltender. We’ve got the luxury and we’ve got to start using it right now.”

The Stars improved to 25-17-3 with the win.

For all the Bruins’ success this season, their overtime record is a dismal 1-6.

“I think overtime is one of those things where yes you have to go on offense, but we have to make sure we know what our matchups and what we need to do with our play away from the puck,” Boston’s Patrice Bergeron said after the game.

Anton Khudobin made 29 saves in the loss but held the Stars off the board after they gained the two-goal lead.

“That’s the positive in this game. We were down two and we were able to scratch back against a very good defensive team,” Cassidy said. “It’s one thing to do it against a team that gives up a lot, but this is a good defensive team. So that’s the positive in it all.”
