Bruins preseason round-up: game 4

The Boston Bruins played the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Saturday night. The Bruins were able to defeat the Red Wings in overtime 4-3; the goal was scored by Torey Krug 1:58 into overtime. Malcolm Subban played the entire game in net for the Bruins and looked decent throughout the game.

He allowed three goals on the 21 shots he faced during the game, like Jeremy Smith the Bruins gave Subban an extended look in net. Unfortunately like Smith he struggled at points in the game, both goalies struggles could have opened a door for Jonas Gustavsson who will return to camp in the next day or two. But for now Malcolm Subban has seemed to edge out Jeremy Smith and could be in a battle with Gustavsson over the back-up goalie role.Boston_Bruins_logo

The forwards played a huge role in the game providing much of the offense for the Bruins, leading the charge was David Krejci. He has looked great this preseason and really has something to prove to himself and the fans. Krejci had the first two goals of the game for the Bruins, Brian Ferlin added one that would give the Bruins the lead at the time.

But the Red Wings would come back and tie it up in early in the third period. With no one scoring for the balance of the period that set up the brand new 3-on-3 overtime. Torey Krug continued to prove why he is a great offensive presence with his game winner. The other big story was Alexander Khokhlachev who assisted on the game winning goal, and continued to try and prove that he should get a shot this season with the Bruins.

Khokhlachev has made headlines over the past few weeks with his comments about making the team, and what it could mean if he doesn’t make the Bruins. He looked good during the game creating space and opportunities, but he still looked very rough around the edges in his own defensive zone. The young defensemen looked sharp and they will need to step up in a big way if Chara will be out for longer then anticipated.

Krug and Miller led the young defensemen as the only two veterans that played for the Bruins on the back end. Zach Trotman had a strong offensive game with three shots, and continues to show why he deserves to be one of the young guys up at the start of the season. My three stars of the night are all Bruins.

Third star Malcolm Subban, despite his struggles he didn’t melt under pressure and came up with some huge saves at key points in the game. Second Star Torey Krug, Krug had the game winning goal for the Bruins and an assist on David Krejci’s second goal. First star David Krejci, he led the Bruins with two goals and has continued to show that he is completely healthy and ready for the grind of this season.

The Bruins will take on the same Red Wings on Monday in Boston.
