Bruins pre-season round-up: Game 2

The Boston Bruins took on the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night at TD Garden, for both teams it would be the first look at the three on three overtime. The game was started by Malcolm Subban, a former Bruins first round pick trying to make a big splash. Subban played well and looked solid, his recovery was great after shots and he seemed very mentally focused.

Subban looked like a man on a mission trying to put his debut from last season far behind him, he ended up with a 17 save shutout. He was followed by first year pro Zane McIntyre who allowed one goal on nine shots. McIntyre was making his pro debut and Boston_Bruins_logolooked a little shaky for most of the game, the one goal that he let in was a tough one.

Subban was obviously the better of the two and through two games; it looks like Gustavsson and Subban are the two leaders to back up Tuukka Rask. Bruins first line was far above what the Capitals could muster, it was an offense that was led by the now “veteran” David Pasternak. At only 19 years old Pasternak is already starting to leave a big mark in the NHL.

He had a great year after being called up, and it looks like he could continue that going into his second season in the NHL. Pasternak had two goals in the game, which included the overtime winner 12 seconds into the 3-on-3. Pasternak was playing alongside David Krejci and Matt Belesky in what was a preview of what the first line could look like this season.

Krejci, looking for redemption this year after injuries sidelined him much of last season, looked solid throughout the entire game. Krejci ended the game with assists on both of Pasternak’s goals. One surprise in the game was Frank Vatrano, who had a breakout prospect showcase up in Buffalo.

Vatrano played a defensively sound gound, and took home third star of the game honors from the Bruins after the game. As for the defense Torey Krug had a great offensive game assisting Pasternak’s overtime winner. Adam McQuaid also found himself on the score sheet with an assist on Pasternak’s first goal of the game.

But it was Joe Morrow who played solid during the game; he was shut down in key situations and showed a little bit of toughness during the game. Now with Dennis Seidenberg’s injury it opens up another spot for one of the young guys to step-up and contribute. The Bruins very clearly had three stars in this game against the Caps.

Third star: Malcolm Subban, he looked great in net and carried a shutout the entire time that he was in net for the Bruins. Second star: David Krejci, Krejci missed a huge chunk of last season with a nagging hip injury and in his first game back he looked like his old self. First star: David Pasternak, it’s an easy first star choice with two goals, carrying all the offense for the Bruins throughout the game.

But one thing to remember he is only 19 and if he can keep production up this season, the Bruins will have a very good offensive threat. The Bruins take on the New York Rangers Thursday night at TD Garden.
