With teams in pursuit, the Boston Bruins have put together a few good games on late.
In a Sunday matinee, the Bruins defeated the Washington Capitals, 6-3.
Patrice Bergeron had two goals for the Boston Bruins
Tuukka Rask made 30 saves to earn the victory.
Boston took the early lead on home ice off goals from Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci in the first period.
“They take the lead and we stuck with it,” Bergeron said. “We know that if we play the right way we can get back in games, we’ve done it many times before. So it was nice to see that poise and that confidence.”
Bergeron and Krejci each had two goals in the win.
“Four games, four wins. So yeah, I would say [we’re rolling],” Krejci said. “I guess before the trade deadline, it’s never fun, right. But after that, we’re here, this is the team and now we’re just playing. We’re just going out there, trusting the system and we’re just playing the game. We just go out and we play.”
The Caps replied with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead in the second period.
On an afternoon of double strikes, TJ Oshie struck for two for the Caps.
“I’ve got to give our guys credit, I don’t think that we ever stopped trying to pursue that game and it just didn’t happen for us tonight,” Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette said. “We had a lot of really good looks, we had three or four breakaways and just weren’t able to cash in on it. There was a lot of good things that we did. At the end of the day, there was probably a mistake or two that we maybe should have cleaned up, could have cleaned up.”
Brad Marchand threw in two goals and four points on the afternoon.
After the Caps took the lead, the Bruins scored four unanswered goals.
Marchand’s second goal of the game was into an empty-net.
Vitek Vanecek made 22 saves in the loss.
“Against a team like that, big moments changed the game,” Washington’s Tom Wilson said. “They have a lot of good players on that side and through the middle of the game, just got to control the outcome as best you can. I think this time of year you don’t want to give them anything and it felt like there was a couple breakdowns they capitalized on.
