In Boston, the Bruins put on a master class in complete game effort in a 6-1 win over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand potted a pair of goals each in the win.
“We’ve continued to build on our game,” Marchand said. “We had a great comeback win the other night. We should’ve been in that game prior to our comeback as well, so it just shows that guys are getting comfortable with one another. Young guys are starting to get their groove and are feeling very comfortable out there. And that’s what we need, that young energy, guys fighting for spots, it creates internal competition and it’s pushing us all to be better.
“So yeah, we had a good game tonight and I think it stems from the work the guys are putting in on and off the ice.”
The Bruins’ defense held the Flyers to 17 goals and only Kevin Hayes’ goal in the second period.
“I mean, they slapped us in the face there,” Hayes said. “It was not a fun game to be a part of. Unacceptable in every aspect of the game. I think everyone needs to figure out what went wrong and correct it in practice.”
Craig Smith and Charlie Coyle had single markers for Boston.
“Yeah, I think it’s a matter of time. … I think we had a lot of good looks,” Smith said. “Maybe we didn’t shoot as much but we were looking for the right shot, and I think that we had some good chances off of it, and I think if you keep doing that … I think you’re in trouble if you’re playing 5-on-5 and its perimeter and you’re not getting second looks and you’re not retrieving pucks. Then things might be a little bit difficult, you had to change a few things.
“But for the most part I think we’re playing our game, we’re using our speed, we’re creating 2-on-1s in different areas and creating some good looks. There’s not much you can ask for other than that.”
Boston swept the two-game set from the Flyers.
Carter Hart made 20 saves in the loss.
“Just kind of boiled over,” Hart said. “I regret doing that. Not a guy who gets angry too often, but just frustrated. It was unprofessional of me to do that there at the end, so I apologize for anyone who saw that. Just heat of the moment.”
