In Sunrise, the Bruins Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves, including 10 such advances in the third period to protect the honor of the Boston faithful in a 2-1 win in Game 5 of their second round Stanley Cup Playoff series with the Panthers on Tuesday night. “I want to stay sharp the whole game, from the drop of the puck to the last whistle,” Swayman said. “I love energy, I can feel energy. The only thing that matters to me is the guys in the black and gold.”
The Panthers will now take the3ir 3-2 series on the road back to Boston for Game 6 on Friday night.
The Bruins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza on a strike by Morgan Geekie 4:49, scoring after coming out from the behind the net for a backhand shot and the goal.
“They were real fast and I thought we were trying to move the puck in a style that does not suit our game,” Florida coach Paul Maurice said. “They had a good first period, but the game is there. … We had our chances, but I didn’t like our game. But, from where we were in the first, we got it to a much better place.”
The Panthers knotted the game, 1-1, on a marker form Sam Reinhart at 6:23 of the middle frame.
He scored off a rebound of an initial shot by an Aaron Ekblad shot form the blueline.
Midway through the second period, Charlie McAvoy, who assisted on the Geekie goal, pushed the Bruins back into the lead, 2-1.
“Never say die,” McAvoy said. “We are going home, and this series is wide open. Let’s go home and win a hockey game. You are not promised anything but the day you have. Go win the day. We won the day today and that’s it. Let’s go home.”
He scored off a rush up ice and taking a shot form the slot that went top shelf.
“I thought we made really good decisions with the puck in the first period, which led to the most O-zone time in a period, which led to quality scoring chances,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “Tonight was our best game of the series.”
Panthers coach Paul Maurice initiated a challenge for goaltender interference, video review upheld the call on the ice for the eventual game winner.
“I am happy that one went our way,” McAvoy said. “You never know with these things, and we needed that one.”
Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves in the loss.
