Bruins edge Islanders, 5-4 after penalties Pastrnak scores in regulation, gets deciding goal on skills

In Elmont, David Pastrnak had a goal in regulation, and was credited with the deciding marker on penalties to give the Boston Bruins a 5-4 win over the Islanders on Friday night. 

Linus Ullmark made 33 saves in the win..

“Well, it was long overdue,” Ullmark said. “This is one of the things that we had last year, and that’s something that we’ve been building and trying to achieve this year. And this was one of those games where it’s going to come if you just stick with it. That’s what we did.”

The Bruins improved to the Bruins 19-5-4.

After a scoreless first period, the two teams traded two-goal outbursts in the middle frame.

“It felt like we were gonna push right to the end,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. “We didn’t know we were gonna be able to tie it up or not. To me, that’s the biggest win of the year, just because of the attitude of the bench. It’s the first time where I felt like there was energy, emotion, and everybody believed.”

Alexander Romanov staked the Isles to a 1-0 lad at 1:42 of the frame.

Simon Holmstrom doubled the advantage to 2-0 at 13:26 off a breakaway.

The Bruins responded with a pair of markers of their own to send the game to the third period, tied, 2-2.

Morgan Geekie hit for a power play strike at 14:45 of the middle frame to get the Bruins within one at 2-1. second.

“We get a power-play goal, and now we’re back in it,” Montgomery said. “We needed the power play to get going offensively because we weren’t doing anything outside the first five minutes. And then we started to feel a little bit of a rhythm, and then we started to support the puck hang on a little bit.”

On another power play, the Bruins’ scored at 17:26 on a marker from Pastrnak.

The Islanders dropped to 14-7-8.

“That’s a good hockey game from us, for sure,” the Islanders’ Anders Lee said. “Just doesn’t go our way in the shootout. So regroup and be proud of what we did.”

The third period was a give and take affair.

The Islanders took a 3-2 lead on a power play goal from Bo Horvat at 5:06 of the third.

James Van Riemsdyk then added another power play goal to the score sheet at 10:48  for a 3-3 tie.

Brock Nelson reclaimed the lead for the Isles at 4-3 with yet another power play marker at Nelson at 12:01.

“Honestly, I didn’t see it go in,” Lohrei said. “I just saw [Brad] Marchand in front start celebrating. I just jumped in on the rush. The puck got to the net. There was a bunch of chaos, and then went into the corner, and I just got in there. I knew Pastrnak was out front, so I thought just throw it to the net, and hopefully we get a whack, but I guess it just went in.”

Boston forced extra time when Mason Lohrei potted a regular, even strength goal at 16:51 for the 4-4 tie.Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves in the loss.

“We played well, for the most part,” Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. “Our penalty kill gave up three power-play goals. So that was basically the difference in the game.”
