Bruins edge Canes on penalties, 4-3 Canes rally in third, but lose skills

In Raleigh, the Hurricanes got early third period goals from Brady Skjei and Sebastian Aho  to rally Carolina to a 3-3 tie with the Boston Bruins on Sunday afternoon.“We understand that he’s got to step up,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said of Aho. “He’s our best player. It’s not all on him, but you can see we need it.”

Charlie Coyle and Jake DeBrusk had markers in the skills competition to give the Bruins a 4-3 win.

Jeremy Swayman made 34 saves in the Boston win.

“I think all of us thrive on the energy in a building like this against such a quality team like that,” Swayman said. “It was fun battling against Freddie Andersen. He had a great game obviously, but I’m excited about the two points.”

The Bruins moved to 57-11-5.

Boston took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal from David Pastrnak.

Carolina replied in the middle frame on a marker from Jack Drury to tie it, 1-1.

The Hurricanes dropped to 47-16-9.

“It wasn’t our best game, but I thought in the third period we certainly came on,” rind’Amour said. “It’s one of those games you probably say it’s good to get a point, considering how it was looking.”

Pastrnak hit for a double, and 50th of the season, in the second period to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

“It’s pretty special,” Pastrnak said. “It’s even better with the win. You never know what can happen; I had plenty of games to get there. It’s pretty cool, and even better to share with the guys I have here.”

Boston increased the lead to 3-1 at 11:46 on a strike by Jakob Lauko .

With the loser’s point, the Canes are three clear atop the Metro Division.

Frederik Andersen made 35 saves in the Canes loss.
