GLENS FALLS, NY – Travis Broughman scored the game-winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout to complete a 5-4 comeback victory for the Adirondack Thunder on Saturday night in front of over 4,300 fans at Cool Insuring Arena.
While Travis Broughman was on the ice injured, the Admirals came into the offensive zone and Ryan Foss fired a wrist shot by goaltender Isaac Poulter for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Foss’ sixth of the year with assists from Carson Musser and Denis Smirnov at 6:11 of the first period.
Danny Katic scored back-to-back goals just over one minute apart for Norfolk. Katic’s first of the night came on the power play at 18:11 and his second came with 31 seconds left in the opening period. The Admirals took a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Adirondack responded with two goals in the second period to get within one. Shawn Weller tipped in a Grant Jozefek shot on the power play to get the Thunder on the board at 8:16 of the second. The goal was Weller’s fifth of the year from Jozefek and Jeff Taylor.
Shane Harper scored a shorthanded goal and Adirondack trailed 3-2 at 14:28 of the second. Harper took a pass from Ivan Chukarov and scored on a breakaway for his sixth of the season. The Thunder went into the third period down by one goal.
The Thunder scored a power-play goal early in the third period to tie the game at three. Jeff Taylor’s shot from just inside the blue line sailed by goaltender Michael Bullion and into the net for his third of the year. Jozefek and Sebastian Vidmar were given the assists and the Thunder tied it 3-3.
Yanick Turcotte scored his first goal of the year at 8:59 of the third period to give the Thunder a 4-3 lead. Garrett Van Wyhe set up Turcotte and was credited with the first assist while Matt Stief was awarded the secondary assist.
After Eric Cooley scored later for Norfolk in the third period, the game went to overtime and eventually a shootout tied 4-4. In the shootout, Travis Broughman scored in the fifth round and Isaac Poulter stopped Denis Smirnov for the 5-4 Thunder victory.
