In Vancouver, Laurent Brossoit made 29 saves to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-0 win over Canucks on Friday night.
“I felt fast today, and on that breakaway, I moved a little too fast,” Brossoit said. “I overreacted a bit with my blocker. It hit my armpit, and I felt it drop and just made sure I covered it up.”
Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele scored off a breakaway at 7:25 of the opening frame.
“It all started with [Brossoit],” Scheifele said. “He made big saves when we needed him to.”
Vancouver dropped to 8-12-1.
“I’m just getting tired of saying we played a good game but we didn’t score,” Elias Pettersson said. “It was another one of those tonight. We have shot opportunities, especially me. I’m trying to make the perfect pass when maybe I can shoot the easy shot and create a scramble and maybe, hopefully, score a goal. Maybe now when the puck isn’t going in, just got to simplify.”
Mason Appleton added an empty-net goal with 77 seconds left on the clock to ice the win.
“It felt like we had the puck a lot but didn’t put enough pressure to the net with shots and traffic,” Canucks head coach Travis Green said. “We missed the net a few times from the point when we had traffic. But there’s also another team that has a say in what’s going on. And sometimes you miss the net because they’re in the shot lane and they’re willing to block a shot.”
The Jets improved to 10-6-1.
“He’s (Brossoit) underrated,” Maurice said. “Connor Hellebuyck gets all the accolades, as he should, he’s a Vezina winner, but our goaltending tandem is just exceptionally strong.”
Thatcher Demko made 29 saves in the hard luck loss.
“You knew right from the puck drop that it was the type of game where if there was going to be a mistake, it would have a big impact on the end result of the game,” Demko said. “Kind of a playoff style game, but I thought our guys rose to the challenge and put a good effort in.”
