DANBURY, Conn – The New York Aviators had their 21 game-winning streak snapped in their regular-season finale on Friday night after dropping a 4-1 decision to the Danbury Whalers in Federal Hockey League action.
Four different Whalers registered multiple points, but it was Chris Seifert leading the way with a pair of goals collecting numbers 23 and 24 on the season respectively.
The opening frame saw both clubs trade goals. The Whalers got on the board first, after Alex Kirschner buried his 22nd goal of the year at the 14:45 mark. New York quickly found the equalizer just 1:15 later, as Andrew Scampoli tallied his second goal in as many nights to pull the game at even 1-1. For the West Islip, NY native, that is his 20th marker of the campaign.
Both teams skated in the first intermission tied, however it was Danbury who pulled away in the middle frame with three unanswered goals. Seifert led the charge with two goals, while Corey Fulton, who had a penalty filled night last game, picked up his second marker of the season. All three goals came with under two minutes left in the second.
The A’s mustered up 16 third period shots, however could not find the back of the net as Danbury skated to the 4-1 victory.
John Dorman is charged with his first loss in a New York jersey after stopping 34 shots, while Peter Vetri grabs the win turning aside 36 of 37.
The Aviators finish the regular season with a 32-12-2 record, which puts them in first place overall. Danbury concludes the year at 24-18-5, fourth best.
New York and Danbury will meet in the semi-final playoff round with Game 1 taking place on March 4th at 7:05PM.
