DULUTH, Ga. – Justin Breton scored a penalty shot goal, and Troy Redmann was solid with 32 saves as the Alaska Aces held off the Atlanta Gladiators 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Infinite Energy Center.
Breton’s tally, his 11th goal of the season, came after he was hauled down on a breakaway at 3:19 of the first period. He went to a backhand five-hole on Atlanta goaltender Matt Ginn who got a piece of the shot, but the trickle and subsequent falling of Ginn on the puck helped push it in.
After a scoreless second period, the Aces opened the third with a 5 on 3 power play. They cashed in as Mitch Jones ripped a shot through Ginn for a 2-0 Aces lead, his second goal of the season.
Atlanta would get its own 5 on 3 later in the period, and Matt Register’s goal made it 2-1. Register blasted a shot that cleanly beat Alaska goaltender Troy Redmann from long range.
Things got interesting late in the third when Alaska was forced to kill a penalty, but Redmann and the penalty-killing crew held on.
Redmann’s 32 saves included 12 in the first period when he was tested often. Ginn completed his game with 37 saves.
Alaska outshot Atlanta 39-33.
The two teams will complete their three-game series Tuesday at 3:05pm Alaska time.
