Johnny Boychuk is ending his playing career because of an injury to his left eye, the New York Islanders announced Wednesday.

The 36-year-old defenseman needed 90 stitches to close a skate cut to his eyelid sustained during a game against the Montreal Canadiens on March 3. The Islanders said it was the second injury to the eye.

Boychuk returned to play three games for the Islanders during the postseason, including two against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final, but further medical exams resulted in Boychuk having to stop playing.

Boychuk scored 206 points (54 goals, 152 assists) in 725 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins and Islanders, and 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) in 104 postseason games. He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011.
