In Raleigh, the Hurricanes handed the Boston Bruins their third straight loss, 4-1 on Sunday.
“We know that team is the cream of the crop, and they’re lapping everybody right now,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “They played last night, (and) we’re trying to catch them. We’re at home (with) a good crowd. I think that’s probably part of it, too. We deserved that one for sure.”
It is the longest losing skid of the season for the Bruins.
Frederik Andersen made 24 saves in the Carolina win.
“The pressure down ice was awesome,” Andersen said. “They didn’t get good opportunities to set up until maybe in the third. That was big.”
The Hurricanes improved to 32-9-8.
“It’s definitely fun to see it up close and see him take it to the next level,” the Canes’ Brent Burns said. “He’s just explosive when he gets the puck. Anyone can see the confidence growing. He’s just a special player.”
Sebastian Aho staked the Hurricanes to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a breakaway after stealing the puck from Boston’s David Pastrnak.
Paul Stastny hit off the power play t 12:05 of th4e middle frame for a 2-0 lead.
Taylor Hall scored, was the lone striker for the Bruins, his goal came in the third period after the Canes had built a 3-0 advantage.
Boston dropped to 38-7-5.
“I think it was their work ethic and how hard they were to play against that led to us being tired, because we didn’t have the puck a lot,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “We were chasing it a lot because they checked us really well, and then they protected it well in the offensive zone.”
With two minutes gone in the third period, Seth Jarvis pushed the Canes lead to 3-0, before Hall’s goal.
Jordan Staal scored a shorthanded marker into an empty net for the 4-1 final at 15:40.
Linus Ullmark made 32 saves in the Boston loss.
“We can’t say we liked what we saw,” Montgomery said. “We didn’t generate chances.”
