The Boston Bruins acquired the number 29 pick in the first round from the San Jose Sharks in a deal last year that sent goaltender Martin Jones to San Jose. The Bruins biggest need heading into the first round was finding a capable young defenseman. They seem to have that young defenseman picking up Dante Fabbro at 14th.
Now the Bruins will be looking to add another young first round forward to add to their haul of future players. The Bruins last season drafted Jake DeBrusk and Zachary Senyshyn with picks 14 and 15 respectively. Both forwards were seen by many to be a few years away from helping the Bruins, but could be the next group of great developed forwards for the Bruins.
DeBrusk had a great year split between the Swift Current Broncos and Red Deer Rebels totaling 21 goals and 65 points. DeBrusk also had a decent showing throughout the playoffs and the MasterCard Memorial Cup. Where DeBrusk scored a goal and had four points for the Rebels through their four game campaign.
DeBrusk is only 19 years old and has already shown some tremendous growth over the year alone. Some sources close to organization have gone so as to predict that he joins the Providence Bruins as soon as next year. As for Senyshyn he had 45 goals and 65 points in 66 games for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Senyshyn was also an OHL All-star this season after seeing a 20 point increase in scoring for the Greyhounds this season. Senyshyn just turned 19 years old in March, and is likely to return to the Greyhounds in 2016 for one last season in the OHL. But Senyshyn’s growth can only promise big things for Bruins fans in the future.
As for this year the Bruins will be looking to find someone who could fill the role of an Anton Blidh type of player in their system. A player who has a decent body size and doesn’t mind throwing their weight around to create plays out of the corners. Add in a decent scoring touch and you have another Milan Lucic type in your system.
Enter Carl Grundström an 18 year old left winger out of MODO hockey in the Swedish Hockey League. He is described by some of the scouts who have seen him play “A very hardworking winger and great team player. Grundström plays an aggressive in-your-face type of game with plenty of intensity. Is strong on his skates, forechecks well and is very valuable on the penalty kill”. But some say he still needs to work on his offensive game.
Grundström will join Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League next season, where he would be able to grow his game and develop more. That is why “The Boston Bruins are proud to select with the 29th pick in the 2016 entry draft Carl Grundström from Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League”
