TOLEDO, OH – The Walleye remain undefeated at home with a 5-3 win over the Wheeling Nailers in front of a sold out Huntington Center on Saturday night.
The Nailers took an early lead on a power play goal by Derek Army at 12:09 of the first. The lone assist on the score went to Reid Gardiner.
The Walleye responded with three quick goals in the second period starting with Mike Borkowski tying the game up on a power play at 7:55 of the second off assists by Ryan Obuchowski and Austen Brassard. Toledo took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal from Kevin Tansey from Davis Vandane and Tyler Barnes at 9:23. Toledo then extended its lead to 3-1 on another goal from Borkowski at 10:43.
Wheeling would pull within one at the 1:47 mark of the third on the power play when Freddie Tiffels scored off helpers from Jeff Taylor and Army and tied the game at 3-3 at 4:41 of the periodwhenGardiner set up Cody Wydo. Toledo regained the lead at 9:19 of the third with a goal by Kyle Bonis who was set up by Patrick McCarron. Borkowski completed his hat trick with an empty net goal with nine seconds left to give the Walleye the win. Assists on the final score of the night went to Shane Berschbach and Tansey.
Fish Tales: Nagle stopped 36 of 39 shots and is now 7-0-2 on the season… Toledo is in Indy on Tuesday night. They return home Thursday for a 10:35 a.m. puck drop against Fort Wayne… Saturday’s crowd of 7,888 was the third sell out of the season at the Huntington Center.
