KALAMAZOO – Dane Fox scored the game’s first goal and fortunately for the Kalamazoo Wings he also netted the game-winner 2:19 into overtime to give the K-Wings a 5-4 victory Wednesday night against the Gwinnett Gladiators.
An innocent shot from the neutral zone turned into the game’s first goal. Fox
fired a slap shot from just outside the blue line that trickled through the legs of Kent Patterson. The goal was Fox’s team-leading 17th of the season.
Increasing their lead to two goals midway in the second period, Gergo Nagy found Matt Caria (15th) open in the left circle for a one-timer.
Attempting to mount a comeback 13:03 into the period, Gwinnett’s Dylan Smoskowitz earned his first pro goal with a wrister that caromed off the post and into the net.
Standing at the far post minutes later, Dyson Stevenson (7th) evened the game by redirecting a Geoff Paukovich slap shot.
Earning their first lead early in the third period Garry Nunn put the Gladiators ahead 3-2 with his 11th goal of the season.
Kalamazoo responded with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. Ludwig Blomstrand (14th) netted his third goal in his last two games to tie the contest at 3-3.
Jumping back ahead midway in the third, Caria (16th) notched his second of the game to give Kalamazoo the advantage.
Nunn (12th) scored his second tally of the night with less than four minutes left in regulation to force overtime.
In the extra session, Fox (18th) earned his team-best fourth game-winning goal 2:19 into overtime to secure the victory for Kalamazoo.
