COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nothing seems to slow the Columbus Blue Jackets down right now. A loss in overtime the previous night did little to dampen the energy from the Jackets. On Wednesday night, the Blue Jackets throttled the hapless Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-0.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 35 saves for his second shutout of the season.
“We got beat start to finish. That’s the bottom line,” Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf said. “It’s not enjoyable when you get beat like that. It is embarrassing when you’re beat 5-0 in another team’s building.”
Columbus scored three times in the opening frame and never looked back.
“It’s a good feeling anytime you win in this League,” Columbus coach Todd Richards said. “Obviously we did a lot of good things to continue with the streak.”
Artem Anisimov, Boone Jenner, Scott Hartnell, Ryan Murray and Jeremy Morin scored for the Jackets.
“That’s been the key the last 10 games or so,” Jenner said. “Everyone’s chipping in, all our [defensemen], forwards, everyone.”
For the Maple Leafs it was just another in a long season filled with failure.
“Obviously we don’t want to lose a game like that,” Toronto left wing David Booth said. “They came out strong and that was the difference, that first period.
“They capitalized on their chances. They played really well that first period and we didn’t match it. The second and third we picked up our game but it was too late.”
The Leafs’ James Reimer was chased to the bench for Jonathan Bernier in the second period after the Jackets built a 4-0 lead.
“I’m disappointed the way it went but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” Reimer said. “You work hard and try to prepare to do your best but sometimes it’s not good enough.”
