Bobrovsky saves Columbus in 4-1 win over Red Wings in Detroit

With their head coach describing his team’s effort as anything other than impressive, Sergei Bobrovsky made 31 saves to help the Columbus Blue Jackets defeat the Red Wings, 4-1, at Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit.

“I didn’t think we were all that good tonight, but [Bobrovsky] made some huge saves,” Columbus coach John Tortorella said. “You have to be able to win games in this league when you don’t play well, and that’s what we did tonight. A lot of that was because of our goalie.”

Columbus won its fifth straight and is 10-1-2 in the last 13 games.

Petr Mrazek got the start in the Detroit net and was shaky yielding three goals on just 17 shots; he was pulled in favor of Jimmy Howard.

Mrazek mishandled the twice and each miscue led to Columbus goals.

“I think both of those goals are ones that Petr is going to want to have back for sure,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said.

Detroit played a better game than the score and outcome suggest.

“I thought we played a good game and did a lot of good things,” Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “They got three fluky goals, and they are tough to play if you get behind.”

Cam Atkinson, Brandon Dubinsky and Lukas Sedlak scored on Mrazek and Sam Gagner scored an empty net goal for the Jackets.

Dylan Larkin was the lone goal scorer for the Wings.

Howard had not iced for the Wings since late November.

“It felt good to get out there and knock some rust off,” he said of coming into the game in the second period.
