Blues trip Sabres in OT, 3-2

There really are no moral victories in hockey but the Buffalo Sabres took solace in a 3-2 overtime loss Sunday night to the St Louis Blues.

The Sabres’ Evan Rodrigues s struck for two goals in the third period to tie the game,2-2, and force the extra session.

Buffalo picked up the loser’s point when Vladimir Tarasenko struck late in overtime to give the Blues their fourth straight win, 3-2.

“Just tried to drive the net and I think when you have so many chances (and the) puck doesn’t go in, you just need to play more simple,” Tarasenko said. “It’s kind of (a) lucky bounce, but I think overall, our line playing better every game. I think we have more and more chances all the time, so I think we just need to score goals in the game and don’t make it all the way to overtime.”

Brayden Schenn and Paul Stastny scored for the Blues in regulation.

Jaden Schwartz (out at least six weeks) and Alex Pietrangelo (day-to-day) missed the game.

“On the outside looking in, you look and see that we gave up two in the third period and had to win it in overtime, but we had a number of quality chances we could have put that game away,” Blues head coach Mike Yeo said. “It’s not like we sat back. In the third period, we had a number of great chances. Their goalie played real well.”

Robin Lehner played well in the Sabres net and made 42 saves in the loss.

“I thought our third period was really strong,” Sabres head coach Phil Housley said. “We’ve just got to start the game that way.”
