In St Louis, the inevitable happened. The Blues lost their first game of the season, 4-3, to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.
The Avs’ J.T. Compher struck for two goals in the win.
“I think first off, we played fast and kept the pressure on them forecheck-wise,” Compher said. “We were physical and made them make plays under pressure.”
Darcy Kuemper made 15 saves for the Colorado win.
“They’re a good team over there. They play fast. We knew that,” St. Louis’ Brayden Schenn said. “I don’t think we had skating legs tonight, I don’t think we moved our feet enough and the result was for us to play probably way too much in our own end.”
St Louis grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period off a goal from Colton Parayko.
The Avs replied with three goals, two from Compher and one from Nazim Kadri.
“They’re a very good team, they’re hard to play against, and if we want to consistently beat them and compete with them, we have to play for 60 minutes,” Blues head coach Craig Berube said. “We only played for 20 tonight.”
Cale Makar scored for the Avs in the third period after the Blues had cut the score to 3-2, on a goal from Vladimir Tarasenko; his goal made it 4-2 to the Avs.
Jordan Binnington made 38 saves in the Blues loss.
