Coming into their game with the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday, the St Louis Blues needed a lift of some kind, any kind.
They got it from Carter Hutton who made 35 saves to help the Blues to a 2-1 win over Detroit.
The win snapped a seven-game skid.
Scottie Upshall and Alex Pietrangelo scored for St Louis.
“I think a lot of guys put a lot in today, especially on the defensive side of the game to make sure that things stay out of our net,” Pietrangelo said. “Overall, a pretty good game. Got away from it a bit there in the second, but we grabbed it there in the third and it was a big push tonight.”
The victory pushed the Blues to 35-26-4.
Andreas Athanasiou had the lone goal for the Red Wings who dropped to 26-27-10 and trail the second wild card spot by seven points..
“I’m not worried about St. Louis, to be dead honest with you,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I’m worried about us, and I think we need to have desperation right now. We’re trying to do the same thing they are, and that’s try to make the playoffs. … I thought that our guys played hard and we competed hard. You’ve got to find ways to score a little bit more. I still think we got a little more in us though.”
St Louis is tied with the Anaheim Ducks for the second wild card spot in the west.
“Those guys (Blues fourth line players) are workers, those guys have success this year. Whether it’s [Paul Stastny] being out (traded) or just kind of where we’re at, we need guys to step up, and I believed that those guys were ready to step up.” — Blues head coach Mike Yeo said of Kyle Brodziak, Scottie Upshall and Chris Thorburn.

Jimmy Howard made 23 saves in the loss.
“We came out good,” Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg said. “I thought we matched their intensity from the first, and the game was a little back and forth there. It would have been nice to get the first goal, but they got that one and we still hung in there.”
