Blues smother Chicago late

The Chicago Blackhawks could not hold leads of 3-1 and 5-4 in St Louis on Tuesday night.

Both leads evaporated in a haze of swarming Blues who downed the Hawks, 6-5, on Tuesday night.

Zach Sanford struck twice and had three points for the Blues.

“I don’t know the last time we had a game like that here,” Sanford said. “I don’t know that that’s our style, but those ones are always fun to be part of.”

Jordan Binnington made 25 saves to get the win.

The third period was a frenetic pace with the Blues outscoring Chicago, 4-2, in the frame.

Duncan Keith had a goal for the Blackhawks who dropped to 27-28-8.

“Obviously a few different changes in the lead there and we had the lead, so back and forth all game,” Keith said. “But as the games are, you’d like to come out on top and obviously it didn’t happen. A lot of breakdowns defensively and that’s the game.”

Matthew Highmore, Brandon Saad, Connor Murphy, and Patrick Kane scored for Chicago.

“Yeah, I mean, that’s a good thing for us, no question,” Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. “We haven’t been able to get it firing consistently. It seems like we’re there. It can help you win games, especially on the road, it got us back into this one and gives us a chance to win in the third. We’re being clean with the puck, we got a shooter’s mentality, we’ve got a net-front.”

Robert Thomas, Brayden Schenn and Ryan O’Reilly scored single markers and had multi-point nights for St Louis.

“That actually happens quite a bit in the [Ontario Hockey League],” Thomas said. “Crazy game. Obviously not our style of play. We have to tighten it up a little bit but happy we got the two points. A lot of run-and-gun, a lot of transition chances, and it’s not our game, but we’re happy we got the two points.”

Justin Faulk‘s goal in the third got the Blues even with Chicago at 5-5.

Corey Crawford made 31 saves in the loss.

“I think, obviously, you’re not getting results, but we thought we were playing really hard,” Highmore said. “We’re in a lot of games here as of late, especially the last Dallas game (a 2-1 loss Sunday). We take some positives from that, but at the end of the day we want to get the win.”
