In Anaheim, by the time game was 2:08 old, the St Louis Blues had posted three goals and the Ducks were dizzy from watching the congratulatory fist bumps at the bench.
Jordan Kyrou struck twice in the early outburst and Zach Sanford added a single marker as the Blues routed the Ducks, 6-1, on Saturday night.
“That was probably one of the hottest starts in my career,” Kyrou said. “It was definitely a good start to get off to that game.”
Jordan Binnington made 23 saves to get the win.
“We’re really all kind of starting to buy in,” Binnington said. “We got a lot of work to do, but it’s a unique season. … We’re doing a good job so far taking care of ourselves.”
Max Jones scored the Ducks’ lone goal.
“Every minute of the game is important,” Anaheim head coach Dallas Eakins said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the last minute, the middle minute, the first minute, they’re all critical. In the end, you have to be ready for each and every minute of the game.”
David Perron scored to make the score 4-1 after the Ducks stopped the early thumping.
“We always want to get off to a good start,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “A couple bounces went our way, and we capitalized on them.”
Kyle Clifford and Vince Dunn added goals for the final count.
“That was probably one of the hottest starts in my career,” Kyrou said. “It was definitely a good start to get off to that game.”
John Gibson got the start and yielded three goals on just six shots.
“The compete level has to go up through the roof,” the Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf said. “When you’re in a situation against a team like that, it’s about being hard on pucks, making strong plays, especially early in hockey games
Ryan Miller made 21 saves in a mop up role.
The two team are back at it on Sunday in Anaheim.
“One nice thing about having a back-to-back is you get to get back at it,” Getzlaf said. “When you come out and lay an egg, so to speak, like we did tonight, you get to forget about it in a half an hour here and get ready for the next one, go out and prove ourselves.”
