In Edmonton, the St Louis Blues scored twice in the back half of the third period on Thursday to tie the Oilers, 3-3, to force extra time.
The extra session solved nothing, and the Blues completed their rally Jordan Kyrou scored the only goal on penalties for the win.
“It was just one of those weird games; weird stuff was happening all game long,” Kyrou said. “It was just one of those games where you’ve got to stay with it and just keep battling.”
Robert Thomas scored in the 12th minute of the third period to get the Blues to within 3-2 of the Oilers.
Vladimir Tarasenko hit for a shorthanded goal with 20 seconds left for the 3-3 tie.
Jordan Binnington made 24 saves in the Blues win.
“Coming through at the end of the third period like that to tie it up was massive,” Binnington said. “You could feel the excitement from the boys on the bench. It’s one of those wins we remember moving forward.
“The mindset’s just give your team a chance to win right until the end and compete.”
St Louis improved to 14-15-1.
It started off well enough for the Oilers. Zach Hyman scored with 63 seconds gone in the first period for a 1-0 lead.
The strike was a power play marker after the Blues were called for incorrect lineup information.
“It was just botched,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “I’m not getting into it really.”
Kyrou tied the game, 1-1, at 6:47 for St Louis.
Connor McDavid hit off the power play at 4:42 of the middle frame.
Edmonton pushed the lead to 3-1 at the midway point of the third period on a strike from Kailer Yamamoto.
Stuart Skinner made 29 saves in the Oilers loss.
