In St Louis, the Blues spotted the visiting Vegas Golden Knights a two-goal lead in the first period on Monday night, and then reeled off five unanswered markers n a 5-2 win.
Jordan Binnington made 32 saves in the Blues win.
St Louis improved to 10-6-2.
“We just kept playing,” St. Louis head coach Craig Berube said. “The start of the game, it was what it was.”
Chandler Stephenson and Reilly Smith struck for goals for the Golden Knights to give them the 2-0 lead in the first period.
“We gave them too many opportunities,” Smith said. “They had too many shots in the slot, and I don’t think we were coming back in the D-zone and stopping them like we should have.”
Ryan O’Reilly, Tyler Bozak, and Justin Faulk replied with three goals to finish the opening frame with a 3-2 lead to St Louis.
“That’s how we play a system,” Faulk said. “When guys do what they did there, I had to poke it away and get the puck. I wasn’t expecting a breakaway by any means. I looked to my left and just saw a blue jersey and realized I had some space. So I was able to go out there and have some fun, I guess.”
Vegas dropped to 11-8-0.
“We got the start we wanted for a change and we talked about that,” Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said. “Then we let them get back in the game. The first goal was a bad angle, and then we turn one over for a breakaway.
“If you’re going to win on the road in this League, you can’t beat yourself. I thought that was the case in the first period. We made some mistakes and had some penalties, and that’s a recipe for disaster when you’re on the road.”
Brandon Saad hot for a power play marker early in the middle frame for a 4-2 lead for the Blues.
“He’s played well,” Berube said. “Like I said, he’s got great speed, outside speed, and he’s heavy. He’s heavy on the puck. That’s two goals in a row, two power-play goals in a row where he’s just battling at the front of the net and gets them.”
St Louis’ Niko Mikkola scored midway through the third period for the 5-2 final.
Robin Lehner made 26 saves in the Vegas loss.
