Blues hold off Detroit for 4-3 win Blues rally back from two-goal hole

In Detroit, the visiting St Louis Blues fell behind, 2-0 in the first period to the Red Wings on Thursday night, but rallied with four straight goals and held off Detroit for a 4-3 win.“I loved our start, but I’m really disappointed with the way we handled giving up the goals,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves for four or five minutes after every goal, we have to go play the right way.”

Simon Edvinsson scored his first NHL career goal for the Red Wings to give them a 1-0 lead in the first.

“I’ll be happy about the goal tomorrow, but tonight is about losing,” Edvinsson said. “I felt for myself, taking two penalties, it wasn’t good enough.”

Jake Walman scored 50 seconds later for a 2-0 advantage and it seemed the Red Wings were in control.

“They came out quickly and I don’t think we were ready to go,” St. Louis defenseman Colton Parayko said. “We knew there was a lot of time left and we just had to start playing the right way.”

Joel Hofer made 25 saves in the Blues win.

“We’re doing a lot of good things,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “We need to keep building from here.”

St Louis improved to 32-33-6.

The Blues rally started with a first period goal from Alexey Toropchenko  for a 2-1 deficit after the opening 20 minutes.

“I was a little surprised when it went in,” Toropchenko said. “The puck was rolling a little and I was just trying to get something on net.”

St Louis scored three times in the middle frame.

Brayden Schenn tied it 2-2 early in the stanza, and Sammy Blais put the Blues up, 3-2, at 12:40.

“We’ve talked a lot about shooting more pucks from outside and getting a screen in front,” Berube said. “We get [Toropchenko’s] goal, then we get a tipped goal off a screen, and then we get a rebound goal off a screen. That’s good stuff.”

Detroit dropped to 31-31-9.

Jake Neighbours scored the third goal of the period for the Blues fora 4-2 lead headed to the third.

Detroit scored at 17:44 off a marker from Alex Chiasson  for the 4-3 final.

Magnus Hellberg got the start for the Red Wings and made 10 saves, surrendering three goals, He was given the hook at 12:40 of the middle frame.

Alex Nedeljkovic made eight saves in relief.
