Blues hand Oilers another loss

In St Louis, the Blues swept their four-game home stand with a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.

Jake Allen made 35 saves in the win.

“I thought we played a real solid game, 60 minutes,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “Power play, we could have got a goal or two on the PP, it makes a big difference. We had 12 shots. Their goalie was really good.”

The Oilers dropped to 19-14-4 with the loss.

“We had some good opportunities but we didn’t find the net until late,” Oilers’ Adam Larsson said. “It’s kind of the story of the game.”

James Neal scored the lone goal for the Oilers and spoiled the shutout bid with just under two minutes left on the clock.

Edmonton is 1-4-1 in their last six games.

Brayden Schenn and Mackenzie MacEachern scored for the Blues.

“He was a machine. He was playing the puck great. He was a rock back there tonight. It just gives us a ton of confidence,” the Blues’ Robert Bortuzzo said of Allen.

The Blues pushed their record to 22-8-6 with the win and they are 8-3-0 in the last 11.

One Oilers goal was waved off for goalie interference.

“We gave it a try,” Allen said. “I think it was a 2-0 game, and honestly, 6-on-4 is a lot easier than 6-on-5. I sort of like the 6-on-4 better. You don’t have to worry about the icings, it gives the other team more time and space to think. When you think you usually take plays a little bit for granted and it’s easier for us because we can just stay in our structure, our PK structure. On the 6-on-5, you get a little running around.”

Mikko Koskinen made 42 saves in the loss.

“Koskinen was excellent,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. “Kept us in the game, so a little disappointing we couldn’t find a way to manufacture a little more offense.”
