Blues hand Kings 5-2 loss

In St Louis, Brayden Schenn scored twice in the third period to help the Blues down the visiting Los Angeles Kings, 5-2, on Thursday night.

Jordan Binnington made 33 saves to get the win.

The Blues were 3-for-4 on the power play.

“We were drilled on the penalty kill,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said. “Our power play wasn’t sharp. More importantly for me, it was above and beyond structure tonight. I thought they were just harder. They stripped pucks, they won battles and small-area games we didn’t win. They were always ahead of us. They got us tired and hemmed in our zone. For me, a lot of it was the physicality in small areas.”

Jeff Carter and Alex Iafallo scored for the Kings who dropped to 4-6-0.

“After losing four in a row there (0-2-2), we’ve responded as a team. We know what it takes to win. Sometimes it’s hard and it’s not flashy, but we know it’s successful,” Schenn said.

Robert Thomas gave the Blues a 3-2 lead in the middle frame after Vince Dunn and Alex Pietrangelo had scored earlier.

“I’ve been trying to get one for the last couple games, been so close,” Thomas said. “After the first one got called off, that kind of [stunk], but nice to get another one.

“I missed an open net the game before. It’s one of those where it will eventually come. Great play by [Zach Sanford] and I had the whole net.”

St Louis improved to 5-2-3.

“Both (special teams) units are doing a good job, obviously,” Schenn said. “[David Perron] made a nice pass to [Pietrangelo] there, too. Both units are going and clicking. You’re not going to score every game, but you have to create some momentum along the way. And obviously tonight it was nice to get three.”

Jonathan Quick made 30 saves in the loss.

“They (St Louis) have what we want. Everyone wants to beat them and give them our A game. Obviously, they did a good job against us tonight, and I don’t think we were as sharp as we needed to be,” the Kings’ Trevor Lewis  said after the loss.
