Blues continue to sink after trades, lose to Canes, 4-1 St Louis drop eighth in last 11

In Raleigh, Andrei Svechnikov  scored a double in the first period to stake the Hurricanes to a 2-0 lead over the St Louis Blues on Tuesday night. “It’s been a while for me,” Svechnikov said. “Whenever you score, it gives you a little bit of confidence, and you just try to create even more chances. I wasn’t worried, actually. I know what kind of player I am; it just didn’t come for me.”

Frederik Andersen made 35 saves to backstop the Canes to a 4-1 win.

“‘Svech’ got us going. He was dynamic pretty much the whole game,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “And then ‘Freddie’ was great. He kept us in the game. Overall, I’m [really] happy with it.”

The Hurricanes moved to 38-10-8.

“I try not to get ahead of myself and really just focus on each situation,” Andersen said. “We’ve been playing really well too, so obviously that helps.”

St Louis got on the board in the middle frame when Justin Faulk  scored with four minutes gone in the frame for a 2-1 count.

“Their first goal was pretty nice, but on the next two we just lost guys in front,” Faulk said. “(On Aho’s goal), they have 2 there against our 1, and they were able to tap it in. We kind of gave them chances that are just mistakes on our end.”

St Louis dropped to 26-28-3 on their third straight loss, and eighth in their last 11 matches.

“I thought we battled,” St. Louis coach Craig Berube said. “Overall, we’ve got to score a couple more goals than we did.”

Sebastian Aho helped the Canes reclaim their two-goal advantage at 16:36 with a goal for a 3-1 lead to Carolina.

Seth Jarvis  scored early in the third period to ice the win at 4-1.

“That kind of came out of nowhere,” Jarvis said. “Usually, I would just get that and shoot it. I thought, maybe I’ll hold onto it. I tried it, and luckily it worked out.”

Jarvis had two assists for three points, and Svechnikov added an assist to go with his double.

Jordan Binnington made 32 saves  in the Blues loss.
