Blues blow lead, lose in OT

In Chicago, the Blackhawks spotted the St Louis two goals in the first period Friday afternoon, and then rallied back to take a 3-2 win extra time.

Alex DeBrincat scored just 87 seconds into the extra session for the win.

“I think I had a couple chances in the game, didn’t go in, and to have a 2-on-1 with ‘Kaner’ it usually ends up on my stick, so it’s nice to get that one,” DeBrincat said. “… To be a good team, you’ve got to win those games. Even if you’re down, you’ve got to come back to find a way, and I think that’s what we did tonight. Hopefully we can build on that.”

Kevin Lankinen made 23 saves in the Hawks win.

Chicago improved to 7-11-2.

“It’s huge. I mean, we talked about it earlier about the confidence these guys are building every game, the ups and downs,” Chicago head coach Derek King said. “… I think the second and third for us was the best we’ve played, simple hockey and just stuck with the program. And it paid off.”

Pavel Buchnevich and Ivan Barbashev (power play) hot for first period goals to give the Blues the advantage, they couldn’t hold.

“We just didn’t generate enough chances, had some chances to score,” the Blues’ Robert Thomas said. “That’s what it comes down to.”

St Louis dropped to 10-7-3.

“I think we ran out of energy, it looked like to me,” Blues head coach Craig Berube said. “Execution was off. I think that was a big part of it, not very good execution.”

Jujhar Khaira and Brandon Hagel rallied the Hawks back to force the overtime period.

“You get down two, they called the offside call, which was the right call,” King said. “We looked at it and it’s fair. But we didn’t get rattled by it. I thought we’d kind of sit back and go into a shell again, but we just kept playing our game.”

Jordan Binnington made 24 saves in the Blues loss.

“We’ve got a deep team,” Thomas said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who can play with anyone, so that’s not an excuse. We’ve got to be better.”
