In a game of streaks, the Golden Knights out-streaked the St Louis Blues in Vegas on Saturday night to grab a 5-4 win in overtime.
The Blues broke out to a 3-0 lead and looked for all the world to be on the way to a win.
The Knights replied with four of their own for a one-goal lead.
David Peron’s third period goal forced extra time.
“We made mistakes. They’re a pressure team and they put on the pressure,” Perron said. “We got a big point, but it would have been nice to get the second one.”
Chandler Stephenson struck with 1:59 left in the extra session to complete the come back for the Knights on home ice.
“Just kept my momentum from the backcheck and wheeled around the net,” Stephenson said. “[Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt] made a good play to kind of keep the puck there, just poked it. Kind of blacked out a little bit from there and just tried to stick with what I usually go with.”
Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves to get the win.
“It wasn’t too much of a statement the first 28 minutes, but after that, we played good hockey,” Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant said. “We battled back. You never say never in this League.”
Alex Pietrangelo, Jaden Schwartz and Oskar Sundqvist staked the Blues to the 3-0 advantage.
“It could’ve been 5-0,” Stephenson said. “It just shows what kind of veteran [Fleury] is. He kept us in it and gave us a chance to come back.”
Vegas rallied on goals from Ryan Reaves, Paul Stastny and Nicolas Roy tto knot the game at 3-3.
“We sat back too much and it killed us,” St Louis’ Ryan O’Reilly said. “They came at us in waves.”
Reilly Smith added the fourth goal for the 4-3 lead ahead of Peron’s tying goal.
“It’s great, this win. We had to score those goals,” Vegas’ Nicolas Hague said. ” I thought our forwards did a good job working the pucks down low. Those goals we scored to kind of claw back in it, they weren’t pretty goals. Just put the puck on net, win the puck battle and just put it in.”

Jake Allen made 28 saves in the loss.
“We got a 3-0 lead, we had a chance to make it 4-0,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “We had some good opportunities early in the second period. We don’t make it 4-0, and if we do, we probably have two points. But in saying that, we’ve got to do a better job around our net.”
