In Glendale, the visiting St Louis Blue pasted the Coyotes on Monday night with a five-goal second period in a 7-4 thumping.
Jordan Kyrou scored twice and had four points on the night.
“It was a momentum game,” Kyrou said. “We had a lot of momentum in those five to 10 minutes. We got a lot of goals in there, which is huge for us.”
Jordan Binnington made 22 saves in the win.
Clayton Keller had a goal in the Coyotes’ loss.
“It’s embarrassing … we were talking that when things get tough, we turned selfish,” Keller said. “I liked our first period, and then we just totally got away from it. They’re a good team and that’s what happens.”
Christian Fischer and Ilya Lyubushkin also scored for the Coyotes.
Arizona held a 2-1 lead at one point off a goal from Lawson Crouse.
“It was a 2-1 game and then the next shift we started to get individual and tried to force it,” Coyotes head coach Andre Tourigny said. “We weren’t as relentless as we can be, and we paid for it.”
Klim Kostin struck for a pair of goals for the Blues, and Pavel Buchnevich and Justin Faulk added single markers.
“It’s crazy at the start of every year, but this is a good start to the season for us, two big wins, and we’ve got to keep it rolling,” St. Louis’ Tyler Bozak said.
St Louis’ Ivan Barbashev closed out the scoring for the 7-4 final.
Carter Hutton yielded six goals and just 15 saves before getting the hook.
Karel Vejmelka made 11 saves in a mop up role.
