In Columbus, the Toronto Maple Leafs were looking to clear the ugly taste of a loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.
They needed Tums instead, as the Blue Jackets handed them a 4-3 loss in extra time.
Patrik Laine‘s second goal of the game gave the Blue Jackets the win in the extra session.
“I knew [Voracek] wasn’t going to shoot his backhand from the blueline,” Laine said. “He made a great play and gave me some room and I was able to get my shot off.
“We had a chance to score more. Four was enough. I was happy to get two of them and help get the two points that we need.”
J-F Berube made 39 saves in the Columbus win.
“He’s (Laine) got some confidence with the puck,” Blue Jackets head coach Brad Larsen said. “He wants to shoot the puck because he believes it is going to go in.”
Auston Matthews and Jason Spezza had goals for the Maple Leafs.
“We’re leaving the rink a little bit sour, but I thought we did a lot of good things tonight,” Matthews said.
Toronto dropped to 32-14-4 after their third straight loss.
“Except for the Laine goal, it’s as perfect a period as you probably can be in terms of our structure,” Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said.
Adam Boqvist and Brendan Gaunce added single markers for the Blue Jackets in regulation.
Columbus improved to 26-23-1.
“I definitely felt more comfortable tonight,” Berube said.
Michael Bunting also scored for the Maple Leafs.
Jack Campbell made 26 saves in the Leafs loss.
“Not acceptable on my part,” Campbell said. “We should have won 3-0, or whatever. … We deserved two points.”
