Blue Jackets survive Detroit rally in 7-5 win

In Detroit Monday, the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets potted three goals in the first period en route to a 7-5 win over the Red Wings.

Pierre-Luc Dubois had two strikes in the win.

“We need to learn a lot from that game,” Dubois said. “We can’t let a team back into a game when we’re up by four goals.”

It was not easy win as the Jackets nearly blew 5-1 second period lead as the Wings rallied to get close at 5-4.

“When we got up 5-1, our guys thought it was going to be an easy night, and there are no easy nights in this League,” Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. “We let it turn into a slop fest, and we’re very fortunate to come out of here on the right end.”

Artemi Panarin, Josh AndersonBoone Jenner, and Markus Nutivaara also scored for Columbus.

Columbus improved to 14-8-2 with the win.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves to get the win.

Anthony Mantha picked up two goals in the loss, and Dennis CholowskiGustav Nyquist, and Mike Green also scored for Detroit.

“I don’t think we competed hard enough and we didn’t execute when we had chances in the first period,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I thought we played well enough to win our last two games. We deserved to lose this one.”

Seth Jones added an empty-net goal to finally end it for the Jackets.

“We were playing together, we weren’t giving them chances and we were capitalizing on their mistakes. In the second period, we got content with the lead. That’s something you can’t do in this League,” Jones said.

Jimmy Howard got the start for Detroit but was given the hook in the first intermission after making 13 saves and yielding three goals.

“We didn’t play in the first period. We have to find a way to play 60 minutes, and I don’t know why that isn’t happening. Coach told us between periods to wake up. That was about all he said,” Mantha said.
