In Chicago, the Blackhawks celebrated entering the NHL’s top 16 power ranking by yielding four third period goals in a 6-5 loss to the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Hawks held a 3-2 lead entering the final frame before the collapse.
Joonas Korpisalo made 21 saves to get the win.
Kevin Stenlund potted the fourth goal of the third period for the game-winner.
“[The puck] was bobbling a little bit, but I was just trying to get the first shot on the goal.” Stenlund said. “[I’m] lucky it went in.”
Cam Atkinson scored off a shorthanded steal for the Jackets.
“I poke checked it to Nick [Foligno] and Nick just made an area play,” Atkinson said. “It kind of caught me by surprise because I didn’t realize how far Kane and DeBrincat were back, so one I’ll take, for sure.”
After the Blue Jackets tool a 1-0 lead in the first period, Chicago’s Nicolas Beaudin and Ian Mitchell scored less than a minute apart in the middle frame for a 2-1 lead. For both skaters, , it was their first NHL goal.
“I was really happy for [Mitchell], everyone was happy,” Beaudin said. “Next shift, I score, so it was kind of funny we scored one after the other.”
Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane added three points each on the night with a goal each.
“We’re in the position to win the game at multiple times,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “We liked our first period, really liked the start of the second. We did little things as the game went on that gave them momentum. To their credit, they capitalized on their chances. They have some good players who had good nights and made us pay. We have to manage the puck better and have a killer instinct in the third period when we have the lead.”
Pius Suter also scored for the Blackhawks.
Michael Del Zotto and Boone Jenner had single markers for the Blue Jackets.
“We made some plays, some guys made some plays,” Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella said. “You could just see some confidence grow. I thought we still had some breakdowns and still gave up some chances, but I just liked the way we made some plays. We made some passes and we climbed out of corners in the offensive zone. Our D were involved in motion offensively so that’s a good sign.”
Jack Roslovic scored twice for Columbus.
“You don’t ever really want to let in five goals, but if you let in five you’ve got to score six, I guess,” Roslovic said. “It’s good, it’s good for the confidence of our group.”
