Blue Jackets rally past Avs with late third period surge

In Columbus, Cole Sillinger scored with 62 seconds left in regulation on Saturday night, to give the Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead over the Colorado Avalanche.

“The puck came around and I tried to find that hole and get to the net,” Sillinger said. “It deflected off my stick and went in the net.”

Columbus’ Alexandre Texier  tied the game, 2-2, just past the midway point of the third period.

“We played two good games against Colorado,” Texier said. “We have to play the same way against every team. I think we know how to play; we know how to win. We just need to do it every single night.”

Columbus improved to 7-3-0.

Elvis Merzlikins made 34 saves in the Jackets win.

“I love how we came out in the third. We came to win a game,” Columbus head coach Brad Larsen said. “That’s a good sign. They wanted to go get that win. That’s a great sign for a young hockey team.”

Andre Burakovsky scored both goals for the Avs.

The Avs dropped to 4-5-1.

“We mismanaged the puck and their forechecking was really good,” Colorado head coach Jared Bednar said. “Most of the scoring chances against us was mismanagement of the puck.”

Oliver Bjorkstrand iced the game for the Blue Jackets with a late empty-net goal for the 4-2 final.

“The third was probably one of the worst periods we’ve ever played,” Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen said. “In the third, we didn’t have our legs on either offense or defense.

“They tied the game, and we were slow defensively, not physical enough. Sometimes it looked like we were playing just effortless.”

Colorado’s Darcy Kuemper made 38 saves in the loss.
