Blue Jackets edge Washington in OT, 2-1

COLUMBUS – It took extra time but the Columbus Blue Jackets continued their impressive play this year with 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals Tuesday night.

Cam Atkinson scored just 37 seconds into the extra session to provide the winning margin.

“It was a good shot by him,” Washington goalie Phillip Grubauer said. “He snapped it right away.”

Columbus is 8-4-2 on the season.

“It’s an identity win,” Columbus coach John Tortorella said. “It’s a step in the right direction for our culture.”

Zach Werenski scored in regulation for the Jackets.

“I just came on the ice,” Werenski said. “I saw there was some ice there and Karlsson found me. The goalie was looking one way, trying to see around (Sam) Gagner, who made a great screen.”

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots for the win.

Niklas Backstrom had given Washington a 1-0 lead in the fist period.

“The first two periods we played a really good road game against a team that’s been hot in this building,” Washington coach Barry Trotz said. “The third period we gave up way too many chances.”

Grubauer made 20 saves in the loss.
