In Columbus, the Blue Jackets put together a complete game on Thursday night, and handed the Philadelphia Flyers a 5-2 loss.
Joonas Korpisalo made 32 saves in the Jackets win.
“The guys were battling out there like crazy, especially dropping down to four defenseman,” he said. “Just seeing how they battled there, you see it, they put 110 percent out there and you want to do the same. It was just a great game by the guys.”
Columbus improved to 4-8-0.
“I like playing in front of these fans,” said Gaudreau. “It’s been it’s been a lot of fun playing in front of them. I’m enjoying my time here so far, so hopefully I can keep scoring here.”
Boone Jenner hot for a double in the win.
The Blue Jackets took a 3-0 lead in the middle frame before the Flyers responded with a goal from Tony DeAngelo in the middle frame and Ivan Provorov in the third period to get them within a 3-2 deficit.
“They’re a good transition team. They waited for us,” DeAngelo said. “They made some good reads.”
The Flyers dropped to 7-4-2.
“I thought our checking was pretty good,” Flyers associate coach Brad Shaw said. “We mismanaged the pucks a few times and they took advantage.”
Johnny Gaudreau staked the Blue Jackets to a 1-0 lead in the first period.
“The other team is trying to take chances and you defend well and play the right way,” he said. “When you’re up a goal, it’s easy to get a lot of odd-man rushes and looks.”
Zach Werenski extended the Columbus lead to 2-0 in the first period before leaving the game later in the frame with an apparent injury.
Nick Blankenburg and Jenner hit late empty-net goals for the 5-2 final.
Carter Hart made 24 saves in the Philadelphia loss.
“The lesson for a lot of our guys is we don’t have to work harder,” Shaw said, “we have to work smarter, be a little but smarter with the puck.”
