Blue Jackets defeat Boston, 5-4, in OT

In Columbus, Monday, the Blue Jackets continued their streak with their eight straight win with a 5-4 win over the Boston Bruins in overtime.

With just over two minutes left in the extra session, Cam Atkinson struck for the game-winner.

The Jackets improved to 40-28-5.

“We stuck with it, and that’s what good teams do,” Atkinson said. “It wasn’t our prettiest, but we found a way to get two huge points.”

Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves to pick up the win for the Jackets who are in third place tie with the Philadelphia Flyers; the Flyers hold the tie-breaker.

“That game belongs to [Korpisalo],” Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella said. “It could’ve been 9-4, so he was outstanding. I’m thrilled for him.”

Boone JennerSonny MilanoThomas Vanek and Artemi Panarin scored for Columbus in regulation as the Jackets rallied form a 3-1 deficit in the middle frame.

“We have played games, outstanding games, and have lost. I thought we [stunk] tonight and we won,” Tortorella said.

Ryan Donato had a goal and three points for the Bruins in his NHL debut.

“I mean, it was fun,” said Donato, a second-round (No. 56) pick by the Bruins in the 2014 NHL Draft. “Obviously it ended tough, but at the end of the day I was excited and I think it all went well personally, but I’d say it’s still bitter because of the loss.”

Brad MarchandRiley Nash and David Krejci also scored for Boston who dropped to 45-17-9.

Tuukka Rask made 20 saves in taking the loss.
