ANNAPOLIS – On Saturday afternoon at McMullen Arena at the Brigade Sports Complex, the Naval Academy’s hockey club teams had one final scrimmage. The game pitted the D1 club against the D3 club team in a spirited event.
The D1 squad ended up 6-1 victors. The game was a bittersweet ending to a challenging year where practices were on again, off again, with no opponents from other institutions.
The teams were still in COVID protocols, and not allowed to use their regular locker rooms. There were no spectators allowed, which added to the bitter part, as the seniors were not able to be recognized with family and friends present. After the game had been played and team photos were taken, the D3 players remained on the ice for one last pep talk from the coaches and senior players.
While the coaches were proud of the player’s for their resiliency during tough times, the seniors reminded the younger players to carry on the traditions of the team, and to savor every moment on the ice, as it could be the last time they play the game they love.
On Tuesday, the ice surface was going to be turned into Lake McMullen instead of the ice surface these men just played on.
I would like to thank everyone associated with Navy Hockey for allowing me to be a part of your final scrimmage, and I look forward to providing more coverage next season. In the meantime, please enjoy the following pictures from the Blue and Gold scrimmage.
