Blaze with weekend double over Steelers

An overtime goal from British forward Ross Venus completed a 4-3 win and four-point weekend for the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze against the Sheffield Steelers at Skydome Arena on Sunday.

Blaze’s success on the powerplay continued as they twice scored on the man advantage in the first period through Mitch Cook (10.59) and Nathanael Halbert (16.46) which top and tailed a Sheffield goal by Brendan Connolly to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Kim Tallberg extended his team leading goal tally to 23 which gave Coventry a two-goal lead on 25.16 with both Halbert and Quince getting their second point of the night with the assists.

Steelers got themselves back within one at 33.31 as Martin Latal beat Hungarian goalie Miklós Rajna who made 31 saves to a record a win on his Blaze debut.

With the clock ticking down, Scott Allen found an equaliser at 52.40 and that’s the way it stayed to end regulation 3-3.

On a one-on-one breakaway against Sheffield goalie Matthew Greenfield, Venus scored the game winner at 62.59 and lifted the roof off a Skydome packed with over 2,360 in attendance.

Blaze next go on a four-game game road trip before returning home to face the Fife Flyers on what will be a special retro night on Sunday 12 March with a 5.30pm face-off.
