Blaze stun Steelers

Three final-period goals led Genting Casino Coventry Blaze to a 5-3 victory over Sheffield Steelers at the Skydome in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League.

Trailing 3-2 going into the last 20 minutes, Blaze turned the game around to register a ninth win in their last 10 in the league to move into joint-sixth place. 175px-CoventryBlaze

Mike Forney fired Steelers ahead after 92 seconds and then restored his side’s lead at 29.17 on the powerplay after Derek Lee had levelled for Blaze on the powerplay at 9.56.

Jakub Sindel (38.23) tied it up again before Tyler Mosienko nudged Steelers in front for a third time with 32 seconds of the middle session remaining.

But strikes from Steven Chalmers (50.06), Lee (56.42) and Jereme Tendler (57.45) – and 39 saves from Brian Stewart – saw Blaze to another vital two points.

Coach Chuck Weber said: “We pushed the pace in the third period and it was nice to see the boys rewarded for all their hard work in practice and the gym.

“To be undefeated in regulation time in 10 games against the quality of opposition we have faced is full credit to the boys.

“I had not seen a lot of Derek Lee but his line with Ashley Tait and Russell Cowley was very effective and to have other guys step up is something we have been striving for.”
