Genting Casino Coventry Blaze suffered a second successive defeat to Sheffield Steelers as they went down 5-0 at Sheffield Arena in the Challenge Cup. Fredrik Vestberg got the go-ahead goal at 4.59 with Levi Nelson adding a second at 7.51 as Steelers out-shot Blaze 16-4 in the opening period. Robert Dowd (21.51) and Tyler Mosienko (26.03) extended Steelers’ lead with the latter then scoring short-handed at 28.01.
Steelers goaltender Tyler Plante made 20 saves as he blanked Blaze for the second week in a row. Coach Chuck Weber said: “We had too many passengers and too many are not simplifying their game and doing the little things right. “We want to get to what Sheffield do – they do the simple things extremely well and we are nowhere near there yet. “We are in survival mode right now and we will continue to struggle against teams like Sheffield unless we change that.” Blaze are back in action when Nottingham Panthers visit the Skydome on Sunday night in the cup (5.15pm face-off). Weber added: “The boys have had a talk in the locker room. No-one is happy and tomorrow will reveal the character of this group in how they respond.”
