Genting Casino Coventry Blaze were shut-out for the second successive game as they went down 5-0 to Cardiff Devils at the Skydome.
Blaze, who lost to Nottingham Panthers by the same score on Friday, were without Derek Lee through injury and the suspended Ryan O’Marra.
Tyson Marsh’s go-ahead goal at 9.33 proved the difference in the first period before player-coach Andrew Lord (24.08) and Doug Clarkson (29.43) added middle-session markers.
Trevor Hendrikx extended Devils’ advantage 33 seconds into the final period before Clarkson and Blaze defenceman Craig Cescon dropped the gloves at 44.19 and received fighting majors. Marsh’s second of the night gave Devils a fifth as Blaze were blanked for the third time this season.
Coach Chuck Weber said: “We are struggling offensively. We are not the type of team to score with just one or two chances, we need to be creating a number of opportunities to score.
“Losing Ryan is disappointing because he is our number one player. He is our top scorer, he plays on the powerplay and penalty kill and he is strong in the face-off.
“Although he was not totally innocent, I felt the punishment was excessive. We lost Derek Lee because of a hit to the head he sustained against Nottingham and we sent the video in for the league to look at. Losing those guys hasn’t helped us.”
